The G permit for cross-border commuters
Do you live in a neighbouring country and work in Switzerland? The G permit lets you keep your home abroad, provided you return there at least once a week.
The requirements
- Be an EU/EFTA citizen and live in an EU/EFTA country.
- Return home at least once a week.
- Border zones no longer apply: you can work anywhere in Switzerland.
- Valid for 5 years with a contract of more than one year or a permanent contract; otherwise for the length of the contract.
The procedure
- Geneva: the worker applies online (OCPM e-services); you can start work as soon as the application is complete, and the permit arrives in about 12 weeks.
- Vaud: the employer submits form G1 (or G2 for a renewal) to the SPOP (Vaud Population Service); CHF 70, or CHF 55 for a change of employer.
- Neuchâtel: via EasyGov. Fribourg: register with the SPoMi (Population and Migration Service) within 14 days and before starting work.
