Retiring in Switzerland

Living in Switzerland in retirement is possible, with very different rules depending on your nationality.

EU/EFTA citizens

B permit for people not in gainful employment: funds above the threshold for supplementary benefits, plus health and accident insurance. Our package: CHF 990.

Other nationalities

  • Be at least 55 years old.
  • Have close personal ties with Switzerland: long previous stays, close relatives in Switzerland.
  • Have sufficient financial means.
  • Not be in gainful employment.

This is not a right: the canton and then the SEM decide. In Geneva, allow around 8 months. Our package: CHF 1’290.

Taxation

Taxation based on expenditure (lump-sum taxation) is available in some cantons for foreign nationals not working in Switzerland. This is not our field: we refer you to a tax adviser.
