The C permit: when and how to get it

The C permit gives you a right of residence with no time limit, more freedom to change job and canton, and counts towards naturalisation.

After 10 years or after 5 years

  • As a general rule: 10 years of residence with an L or B permit, including the last 5 years without interruption with a B permit.
  • After 5 years: citizens of the EU-15 (Germany, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden) and EFTA, and depending on the canton, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and microstates.

The early C permit

After 5 years of uninterrupted residence with a B permit, anyone can apply for an early C permit if they are successfully integrated and have B1 spoken and A1 written level. In Geneva, allow around 12 months for processing.

The integration requirements

  • Respect for public safety and order.
  • Respect for the values of the Federal Constitution.
  • Language skills: A2 spoken and A1 written for the standard C permit.
  • Participation in economic life or in education or training.

In the canton of Vaud, you attach in particular your employment contract and 3 payslips, a debt enforcement register extract and your language certificate.
