Changing canton, employer or status
Your permit is tied to a canton, and sometimes to an employer. Before moving or changing jobs, check what you need to apply for.
Changing canton
You need authorisation from the new canton. Holders of a C permit or an EU/EFTA B permit generally obtain it easily; for a non-EU B permit, the new canton assesses the application. Report your departure to your old municipality and your arrival at the new one within 14 days.
Changing employer
Free for C permit holders and EU/EFTA citizens. For a non-EU B or L permit tied to a job, the change usually has to be authorised.
From L permit to B permit
With a new contract of at least one year or a permanent contract, an EU/EFTA L permit can be replaced by a B permit.
