Your permit after a divorce or job loss

A permit tied to a marriage or a job is not automatically lost when your situation changes. But you need to act quickly and document your case well.

After a divorce or separation

The foreign spouse of a Swiss citizen or C permit holder generally keeps their right to a permit if the marriage lasted at least 3 years and they are successfully integrated, or for serious personal reasons, particularly in cases of domestic violence. See also myswissdivorce.ch.

After losing your job

EU/EFTA citizens keep their B permit, but after more than 12 months of involuntary unemployment, the first renewal may be limited to one year. For non-EU permits tied to a job, you need to find new work and have the change authorised.

Our package
