Your obligations as a permit holder

Most permit problems come from something forgotten. Here are the rules you need to know.

Arrival and moving house

Register your arrival with the municipality within 14 days. When you move, report your departure to your old municipality and your arrival at the new one within 14 days. In Neuchâtel, non-EU nationals must obtain written consent from the migration service before moving to another municipality.

Stays abroad

The C permit lapses after 6 months abroad. You can apply to keep it for up to 4 years before you leave, then register within 14 days of your return.

Renewal and changes

Apply for renewal in good time, report any change in civil status, and have a change of canton or, for certain non-EU permits, of job authorised. Our Permit Reminder helps you not to forget anything.
