The non-EU/EFTA work permit
For a national of a non-EU/EFTA country, the employer applies for the permit. The application must convince two authorities: the canton, then the SEM.
The requirements
- Managers, specialists or qualified workers, usually with a degree and several years' experience.
- Priority for workers from Switzerland and the EU/EFTA: the employer must prove its recruitment efforts.
- Salary and conditions customary for the region and sector.
- 2026 quotas: 4,500 B permits and 4,000 L permits, plus 2,100 B and 1,400 L for the United Kingdom.
The procedure
In the canton of Vaud, the employer submits form 1350 in 3 copies to the foreigners' office of the municipality where the company is based, with a cover letter, the CV, proof of recruitment efforts and the contract; the review costs CHF 400. In Geneva, the application goes to the OCPM (Cantonal Population and Migration Office) and the OCIRT (Cantonal Labour Inspectorate) checks working conditions. After cantonal approval, the SEM gives its consent, then the visa is issued.
